“We Are All Equal”
Mt. 20:1-16 John Eudes
During Pride I had two brothers help me, and I paid them equally, even though one was only their half the time. Their father commented how it made them feel good that I treated them equally. On the street tonight people were asking me for money, for socks, for food, all fighting to get their share. I gave them food, socks and needles equaly and they all complained because they needed more. That is the way that we are in all walks of life–we want more than our share, hence the world is suffering, so many go without. If we would share equally all would have enough. I believe we all should have access to food, housing, and health care–no matter whether or not we earn it or not. What Jesus was saying in this parable is that all of us deserve equal treatment because we are children of God. Tonight people were simply grabbing at me. There was “Simon” whom I have known for six years, he is twenty two, a crack addict, angry because I would not give him money, there was “Zach”, 28 the same. There needs are so deep, that they respond angrily and hence never get them met. I believe that our inhumanity to each other is the cause of the economic, environmental, health crises and that if we would follow Jesus in this parable we would not have those problems. I have three long days a head of me and then I am going to take off for three days. I am exhausted, totally exhausted, people pulling at me in all directions–people from all walks of life, oh, a couple of days of answering to know one, just to myself. Deo Gratis! Thanks be to God!”
