“The Cross Is At the Center”
Matthew 17:10-13–Our Lady of Guadalupe
The cross is always at the center of our Christian lives. We can hide behind the manger, we can avoid it all we would like, but the cross of Jesus is at the center. This morning the cross is at the forefront of my thinking, and my life as I think about the kid I did not go get last night. I think of how he has suffered in the rain, in the cold. Even though it is his fault–he is still suffering–and whether I should have picked him up is not now the question–it is his suffering and I should have relieved it. On the otherhand I provided care to many others last night. The cross for me is always if I can do more, or am I being selfish. Today is the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. She revealed herself to a suffering people, to people to whom the Church had basically crucified. And so I go into the day with a heavy heart for Oppie, but also with joy for the people I will meet today. The cross is always before us. Deo Gratis! Thanks be to God!
